Tonique Sewell

Tonique Sewell is a fine artist based in London, originally from Jamaica.

Ever since graduating she has been working to find her own distinctive style as a painter using the various skills she has learnt throughout the years.

She now seems to have found her own methodology.

The technique we see represented in her latest body of work comes the transposition of digital paintin from learning how to paint digitally. The results are outstanding.

Over the past few years, the artist has found themselves drawn to the enigmatic allure of painting metallic subjects, weaving intricate narratives into each canvas. Their creative vision is akin to that of a film director crafting a set, aiming to evoke a mood and transport viewers to captivating realms through their work.

Their latest series explores the raw and evocative world of automotive decay, characterized by a gritty, grunge aesthetic.

Set amidst the backdrop of Kingston, Jamaica, these paintings depict the haunting beauty of abandoned cars scattered across the island.

During their travels, they observed the prevalence of these forgotten relics, casualties of the island’s treacherous pothole-ridden roads. It became evident that neglect stemmed from the challenges of maintenance and a lack of governmental intervention to address infrastructure issues.

Despite their dilapidated state, the artist found themselves drawn to the vivid hues adorning these forsaken vehicles. Each brushstroke became a lament for their neglected condition, a poignant reflection of the passage of time and the resilience of the human spirit.
