£3,200.00
Hollow sculpted & coldworked glass, 12 x 20 x 20 cm.
Aria: “Somewhere between ‘The Mask’ and ‘American Phycho’ is the point of inspiration for this piece. Both films contemplate the human psyche in the guise of masks, one metaphorical and another metaphysical, each depicting an exaggeration of a personality; Bateman being a psycho under cover, and Ipkis a shy nice guy who finishes last. Although these two stories are very far away from each other, each film expresses the concept that we all wear masks to hide our inner identities, an apt reflection of human social behaviour.
This mask is made to resemble the imitation rubber mask that Ipkis is thrown out of the car with by the gangsters, which is used to frame him. The flaccid rubber mask is a metaphor for the timid, feeble mask that Stanley Ipkis puts on in his day-to-day life, a reminder of the futility of masking his inner personality.”
