About Nikita Andrejev

Nikita Andrejev, Bug Life No 4, oil paint on canvas, 2024, 78.5 x 93 cm.

Nikita Andrejev’s practice is rooted in an exploration of the materiality of paint and the expressive potential of mark-making. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, his work captures organic forms—ranging from stones and trees to weather patterns and animal anatomy—revealing a deep fascination with the interconnectedness of life and matter.

At the heart of Andrejev’s approach is a continual inquiry into the nature of the “natural.” By studying geological formations, plant structures, and the bodies of both humans and animals, he deconstructs these subjects into fundamental forms. Through a process of merging different bodies that exist in the natural world, he creates abstract yet evocative shapes, incorporating independent visual elements that emerge throughout his practice.

Andrejev’s work constructs narratives that transcend the purely visual, delving into concepts such as emotion, energy cycles, and the rhythms of life and death. His paintings seek to evoke raw, instinctive emotions in both himself and his audience, emphasising the ephemeral chemistry that underpins the act of painting. Through his compositions, he crafts a world that mirrors our own, inviting viewers to experience nature on a deeply emotional and visceral level.

Andrejev’s oil painting, Bug Life No 4, featured in our September 2024 group exhibition, ‘InBound Carousel’.
