The neurological phenomena “going non verbal” is described as “I want to communicate but my translator for speech basically shuts down because I have no extra energy for processing”. This is more common in people with levels of autism, often being a symptom of autistic burnout, a state in which people with autism may withdraw or become non-verbal in response to challenges. Autistic burnout can occur when the demands of navigating a neurotypical world become too much. Other signs of autistic burnout include, difficulty with speech, language, executive function, or self-regulation and a heightened sensory sensitivity or need for more sensory input, common symptoms in contemporary culture.
